How To Remove Cat Urine Stains & Smells From Your Clothes

Getting the smell of cat urine out of clothes is a simple task. It's a good thing too because every once in a while, my cat decides that she loves our clothes piled up in the laundry room more than her litter box. We love her to death but she loves our clothes.

We Didn't Always Use Frontline.

We made a big mistake! Not only did our cat get fleas but our cat gave the fleas to our other cat which in turn gave the fleas to our dog, before we even knew what hit us. We keep Frontline on hand at all times now. We had to bomb our whole house just because we got a little lazy with the frontline.

Now we stock up on inexpensive Frontline here every three to six months.

You and I are not alone! Cats love to find a soft and warm spot to mark with their urine. Cats are attracted to your clothes when they are stressed. By urinating on the your clothes they are mixing your scent with their own. Cats will find the smell of their urine (i.e. their scent) mixed with your scent very soothing. You may find your cat urinating on your clothing more often when they are stressed.

Getting angry and shunning your cat for urinating on your clothes can actually have exactly the opposite effect that you want. Your cat will pick up on your feelings and become more stressed. You can probably already see the cycle forming and understand why your cat will often urinate on your clothes repeatedly in a short span.

There are products on the market that remove the smell of cat urine from your clothes. The product that I have heard recommended the most times by users is Urine Gone. You can add urine gone directly to your clothes in the laundry. Urine Gone is an enzymatic cleaner that actually "eats" the urine from your clothes.

Enzymatic cleaners like Urine Gone remove all organic smells from clothes. Removing all traces of your scent as well as removing the urine smell from your clothes is key. Reducing the amount that your clothes smell like you, should reduce the frequency of your cat urinating on them.

If you are not interested in removing all organic smells from clothes, you can just remove the smell of the cat urine from your clothes with a common household ingredient. Try using apple cider vinegar in with your laundry. Start off small with it and see if it removes the urine from your clothes.

Start with about a quarter cup of apple cider vinegar added to the final rinse cycle of your clothes in the washing machine. If a quarter cup in the final rinse cycle does not remove the smell, than wash them again with a cup in the wash cycle and a half a cup in the final rinse cycle.

Last tip: Don't put the clothes into the dryer before the smell of the urine is completely gone from your clothing. Adding heat in either the washing machine or the dryer will "seal" the urine smell and and make it very difficult to remove from your clothes.
